September 8--Will Schmid, "World Music Drumming: The Next Generation"

Will Schmid holds a B.A. from Luther College and a Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music.. Will Schmid is former chair of the Music Dept. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and past-president of MENC. He has given workshops throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico and Europe.

After a two-year $140,000 national pilot project in twenty schools nationwide, Dr. Schmid launched the World Music Drumming curriculum. Dr. Schmid is the recipient of the 1996 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Eastman School of Music. In 2002 he was named a Lowell Mason Fellow by MENC and given the Distinguished Service Award from the Music Industry Conference (MIC). In 2006, he was named the inaugural winner of the DeLucia Prize for Innovation in Music Education given by the Mockingbird Foundation. During his presidency of MENC (1994-96), Dr. Schmid worked to reestablish the importance of active music making in schools and in America at large.

October 13--Melissa Berke, "Sing Me a Story, Play Me a Book"

Dr. Melissa Berke is a Coordinator of Music Education. She has been a clinician at numerous national and regional conferences. Her current research interests include early childhood music education, music education for students with special needs, the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education, and the integration of music and the arts within the general curriculum.

Dr. Berke has taught elementary and middle school vocal/general music in Iowa, Arizona, and Nebraska. In addition to her public school teaching experience, she has taught music at the preschool level in various settings. Dr. Berke serves as President-Elect of the Society for General Music, President of the Great Plains Orff Chapter, and is a consultant for the Macmillan McGraw-Hill "Spotlight on Music" textbook series.

Dr. Berke received both her Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees from Drake University, and her PhD from The University of Arizona.

Please contact our president Mary Clark by the October 13 th meeting with your workshop ideas if you are willing to present. Bring a copy of your notes to the October meeting so that we can have them run off.

February 19--Lisa Sullivan, "Getting It All In"

Lisa Sullivan teaches general music at Mohawk Trails Elementary in Carmel, Indiana. She teaches private piano in her home studio. Lisa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Butler University and a Master’s degree in Elementary Administration from Ball State University. Lisa currently serves as the Region IV representative for the Indiana Music Educators Association. Lisa completed three levels in Orff Schulwerk, as well as Orff Curriculum, and Orff Master Class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Lisa apprenticed Level I with Cindy Hall at the University of Kentucky and has presented at local chapter meetings of the Indiana Orff Schulwerk Association as well as State Conferences of the Indiana Music Educators Association. Lisa presented at the Cincinnati and Las Vegas AOSA conferences and she currently teaches Orff Level I and Orff Curriculum at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana and Orff Level I at DePaul University in Chicago. Lisa has taught Orff Level II basic at Anderson University, Level II Recorder and Movement at IPFW in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Orff Level I at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, Florida.

March 15--Artie Almeida, "Fun With Fundamentals"

Dr. Artie Almeida is the music specialist at Bear Lake Elementary school in Apopka FL, where she teaches 1150 kindergarten through 5th grade students. Her dynamic performing groups have performed for MENC, AOSA, and on the NBC Today Show.

Artie was chosen as Florida Music Educator of the Year, and was also selected as an International Educator 2006 by the Cambridge England Biographical Society. She was Seminole County Teacher of the Year, Runner-Up for Florida Teacher of the Year and a Teacher of the Year at the school level 6 times. She is included in Who's Who in American Education and the publication Great Minds of the 21st Century.

Artie is the author of Mallet Madness, Recorder Express, The Ultimate Game and Activity Pack for Orchestra, ten Music Proficiency Packs, as well as four music theory and assessment games featuring the Warner Brothers Looney Tunes characters.

In addition to her public school teaching duties, Artie teaches applied saxophone lessons and performs on historical winds with the renaissance ensemble Ars Antiqua. For twenty-one years she also taught elementary music classes at the University of Central Florida and early childhood music classes at Seminole Community College
